“Whether in town for the bird festival or otherwise, guests get quite a treat when they visit us in January,” said Diana Hanauer, director of sales and marketing for the Inn at Morro Bay. “Between the rare bird sightings and the sweet serenades by our feathered friends, it’s really a magical time to be in Morro Bay.”

Depending on the season, or if dinner was early enough, you might want to take in one of the many performances at the Cal Poly Arts Center, or a movie at one of the city’s 15 screens. Or just curl at a local club offering good music and a glass of Merlot.
On any given Sunday, the town of Cayucos (Chumash for canoe) is located halfway between San Luis Obispo and San Simeon. Many of its early European settlers were Swiss dairy farmers. Cayucos is not big on frills. There’s a pier from which the locals throw a line in the water. A few antique shops, a realty office, a post office and a candy store line the main street, North Ocean. On any given Sunday, customers are queuing up for brunch at Hoppe’s Garden Bistro and Wine Shop at 178 North Ocean, right next door to the candy shop. As the name suggests, the restaurant features both a main dining room and a garden. Wine tasting is offered at the bar. The $21 brunch offers a selection of entrées that are well worth the wait. A glass of champagne or cabernet dubbed “The Purple Gang” with dessert completes the menu. Before being seated, take a look at the garden and check out the framed photographs and old newspaper articles on the walls. Most of the photos and stories are of or about early settlers to the area, except for the 20” x 24” photograph of Queen Victoria that dominates the back wall. No! She never ate there, but if you’re not in a hurry, you will be treated to a royal feast.
If you’ve come this far, you might as well go on to San Simeon. Hearst Castle, with its 165 rooms and 127 acres of gardens, terraces, pools and walkways, is still the biggest attraction in the region. After the castle join the crowds watching the giant sea lions sunning themselves on the beach. I can’t imagine a surfer rolling up on one of these monsters, but I’m sure some sea lions feel the same way about surfers.
By the way, if you’re anywhere near the Inn at Morro Bay around the sunset hour, stop in. It’s my treat.
