Morro Rock is a prominent volcanic plug and a famous tourist attraction that rises 576 feet (176 meters) above the Pacific Ocean. Formed 23 million years ago, Morro Rock is one of a series of volcanic plugs known as the Nine Sisters, which stretch from San Luis Obispo to Morro Bay.  
The rock is protected as a state historic landmark and is home to a variety of plant and animal species.

During the summer months, from roughly Memorial Day to Labor Day, the Morro Bay Harbor Department staffs 2 lifeguard towers on the City Beach. Lifeguards are on duty from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. , and beachgoers are always encouraged to consult them before entering the water. Always swim near a lifeguard.

Can I touch Morro Bay Rock?

No, the rock is in a protected section of a park. You are permitted to walk around about half of the rock base, but you cannot climb it.
